So grab the mic, knock back a drink and prepare to belt out one of these surefire hits. But for a few weeks in the summer of 1991, for instance, every Guns N’ Roses concert was like a 2016 Trump rally, a must-see spectacle teetering on the edge of riot. For a good decade there, it seemed as though "Born to Run" was the absolute final word in blue-collar rock & roll mythmaking—but then along came the Boss's fellow Jerseyans Bon Jovi, who slathered the old story of two hard-luck dreamers longing for escape with a thick coat of glam-era bombast. Robert Smith’s un-merry men spent roughly half of the ’80s making desperately sad goth rock, and the other half writing some of the best pop songs of all time. Irony!) 78) …. “That’s great, it starts with an earthquake,” begins Michael Stipe—and the rumbling and rambling get crazier from there in R.E.M.’s ironic beat poem. Fine Young Cannibals - She Drives Me Crazy Rick Astley - She Wants To Dance With Me Surface - Shower Me With Your Love Michael Jackson - Smooth Criminal Love & Rockets - So Alive Donny Osmond - Soldier of Love Tears For Fears - Sowing the Seeds of Love Rem - Stand Paula Abdul - Straight Up Ann Wilson & Robin Zander - Surrender To Me You dig what I’m saying?”). Best moment: “So many seem so alone/ There ain’t no one left to cry to,” a lyric where Axl’s voice burns through the production and grabs you by the throat. Those unforgettable snare snaps comes courtesy of producer Steve Albini, and it’s one of the many touches the band’s most popular song (one that wasn’t even released as a single in ’88) has going for it: Among the many others, there’s Kim Deal’s haunting, reverb drenched backing vocals that so many indie-rock groups would go on to ape, a cracked-voiced Black Francis spitting out cryptic-cool lyrics, and deceptively simple lead guitar and bass combo that still gives us goosebumps. Best moment: That Axl rode this whole Chinese Democracy idea for 15 years. Before Vanilla Ice famously ripped off, er, was inspired by the work of Queen bassist John Deacon, that subtle, infectious plucking heralded the meeting of two wildly influential rock icons. 24. 58. This song represents the apex of scream-along arena-scale pop-rock. Toto was a collection of studio ringers with credits on Steely Dan and Boz Scaggs records. Best moment: The bass line, charging straight from the depths with you in its sights. 32. Best moment: Axl’s Kashmir-meets-Sunset-Strip chanting that comes in after 45 seconds of intro nonsense. Those who grew up in the '90s should know this from two awesome movie dance scenes: a sexy one in Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom and a silly one in Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion. “Double-Talkin’ Jive” (Use Your Illusion I)Another case where the production works against the song’s intent: this is one of Guns’ meanest riffs, blades of sound undercut by the dated drum sound and, of course, Axl throwing in his devil-on-your-shoulder asides (“No more patience, man. I’m looking for a song by an independent band from Nova Scotia, Canada from the 80’s or 90’s … might be called The 4 Tops or The 4 Seasons (obviously not the famous bands)… part of the lyrics to the song are: “You’re my precious little baby girl, best damn person in the whole wide world. 65. Duff and Axl combine on vocals, while Slash slathers the whole song in gasoline and sets it on fire. (The irony, of course, is that nobody cared more about you, and specifically what you thought of him, than Axl in the early ‘90s. It’s interesting but not necessarily revelatory (as opposed to, say, Hendrix on “All Along the Watchtower” or Johnny Cash on “Hurt”). Here’s an iTunes playlist of the whole list created by reader PeteSoPete, The Devaluation of Music: It’s Worse Than You Think, Being Queen’s Roadie was One Intense, Rewarding Job, How Queen Embraced Disco, Conquered America, Then Bit The Dust, Record Labels Need a Change of Culture in the ‘Dashboard Era’ of the Music Industry. Livin' in a lonely world. “Raw Power” (The Spaghetti Incident? “Used To Love Her” (G N’ R Lies)The crowning achievement of the “remember this was written in 1988; that doesn’t make it right, but still” manifesto that encompasses so much of Guns’ oeuvre. Well I know she loves me so. Look out for your first newsletter in your inbox soon! This version of “Sympathy” is, like much late GnR, too slick and clean to scare anyone; it’s as if rock’s last great band was too intimidated by one of rock’s greatest songs. Oh Mickey, you're so fine You're so fine, you blow my mind, hey Mickey, hey Mickey Oh Mickey, you're so fine You're so fine, you blow my mind, hey Mickey, hey Mickey Oh Mickey, you're so fine A New Order single is like if architecture was flush with hormones. If you were a band in the 1980s and heard this song closing the album, you’d be tempted to go back to selling couches. 373 rod stewart some guys have all the luck. Apparently the aforementioned crotch moves, hot model and fast car weren't enough to assert his manhood. Unlike its evil twin in 1980s rock, Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” the song was not a huge pop hit; on its 1987 album, Document, R.E.M. Same tempo, same key, same arrangement and instrumentation, same everything. Oh, but there’s that one more song buried deep within (see No. Lyrics to 'Mickey' by Toni Basil. Everyone makes mistakes; let’s not dwell on ’em. “This I Love” (Chinese Democracy)Chinese Democracy is the Batman vs. Superman of albums: overwrought, unnecessarily drab, full of forced gravitas, but with the seeds of a decent core buried deep within. Yep, there’s another one here. Album Cover Image Courtesy of Island Records. 13 Songs That Sound Suspiciously Like Other Songs. Fine Young Cannibals were so much weirder and cooler than you remember. You can find a list of these songs in our Contribution and Cover songs page. )You hear the sinister snaking lead line here, and you hear Velvet Revolver’s “Slither,” the greatest Guns N’ Roses song that Gn’R never recorded (above), and you get a look at where this band was headed before detonation. Best moment: The Triple Axl in the video. Axl spits some of his usual hallucinatory paranoiac hostility (“Gonna have some fun with my frustration/Gonna watch the big screen in my head”), but here, like in few other places, it works. Best moment: The “Why let one! She described the composition as being not so much a love song as a celebration of her life at the time. Roxy Music’s most played song on Spotify by a country mile (the runner up, “Avalon,” draws about half the audience) didn’t even crack Billboard's Top 100 in the States upon its release. One-hit wonderful, “I Can’t Wait” is Nu Shooz’s only real smash, topping the charts around the world in 1986. Experimentation isn’t always a bad thing. “The Garden” (Use Your Illusion I)This one begins with a classic Slash-Duff slither, then come the arena-rock echoing drums, and finally an edgy-ethereal slide guitar leading into an Alice Cooper guest spot. You’ve got a samba-esque beat, a Middle Eastern-influenced sitar line, a synth orchestra, and your standard Western rock band bass line all layered atop one another. The Clash (1982) It's a song that let us coexist with dual personas: the snarling punk rocker who wasn't afraid to push… The third single from Guns N' Roses' shining debut, 1987's Appetite for Destruction, it was the band's first and only number one single. 71. The band was so tight through three tempo changes that this ends like a slamming door. Best moment: The snake move that you’re doing right now. “It’s All Right” (Live Era ‘87–’93)A gentle piano ditty, a cover of an old Black Sabbath tune that usually served as an intro to “November Rain” during shows, this is — again — an example of how good and affecting this band could be when they cut out all the ancillary, overproduced crap. And Axl and Izzy joined the Stones onstage to cover “Salt of the Earth” once. Originally inspired on a long car trip during which we named the songs that would be on the ideal compilation CD, this list now consists of over 500 songs that we feel best capture the spirit of the 1980s (and a few from outside the 80s). The verse is straightforward jackhammer rock, but it’s in the chorus, with its delicate (!) (Another underrated element of Axl’s stage routine: the way he would run, then stop, stand straight up, and deliver a kicker of a line; it was the Klay Thompson pull-up three-pointer of its day.). We defy your feet to stay on the floor as that cyclical, cynical, irresistible chorus hurtles on. Guns N’ Roses won’t ever hit the heights it did in the early 1990s, but at this point, neither will anybody else. )If there’s a problem that’s common to all Guns covers, it’s this: the band all too often just jacks up the original with extra bass and a heaping helping of Axl. With a no-nonsense attitude and some killer dance moves (the video was choreographed by Paula Abdul), Jackson established herself as one of R&B's leading innovators and a woman who wasn't afraid to demand what she deserved. 7. 64. No idea, but it rocks in an antiseptic, post-Slash way. Too many people mock the ‘80s as an age of excess, yet loads of classic singles from the era are studies in cool restraint (see: Phil Collins—no, honestly). Plus, “I get up around 7, get out of bed around 9, and I don’t worry about nothin’ because worryin’s a waste of my time” is a pretty solid life ethos. “Welcome to the Jungle” (Appetite for Destruction)This is one of those songs that you can’t even listen to with anything remotely approaching objectivity; you’ve heard it too many times, in too many places, with too many associations in your life. So fine, so fine. Ridiculous end tag: someone (probably Axl) playing the chorus melody on a kazoo. 72. 26. Nine years later, though, he came awfully close to outdoing himself with "Sexual Healing," his first non-Motown single (released just two years before he was fatally shot by his father). Guns N’ Roses wanted to be the biggest band in the world, and if they’d only recorded this one song, they’d still have a claim to the title. Best moment: Seven seconds in, when the guitar, bass, drums and piano all come down on the beat. Oh, it’s so easy to mock U2: the bombast, the shades, the pomp… But the band’s 1987 opus, The Joshua Tree, contains three of its mightiest songs in a row, of which “With or Without You” is its most affecting. The best song of the many Guns wrote about the grips of addiction. If ever there was a time for an enormous chorus, it was the ’80s—and this 1984 smash from Foreigner offers an example of this that's at once gleaming, gorgeous and gut-wrenching. But on the flip side, we didn’t get Guns’ version of “Don’t Want To Miss A Thing.” Yet. "Just a small town girl. 17. Best moment: Axl keening like the Axl of old, screaming “I would do anything for youuuuu” starting around the 3:57 mark. As a cocksure teenager, Prince passed on four major-label record deals, demanding artistic autonomy until Warner Bros. granted it. Best moment: Slash breaking out the old Peter Frampton vocoder for the wooah wooah guitar sound. Damn! 1 for two weeks (1990) This 1981 platinum-certified single is essentially Australia's unofficial national anthem, incorporating country pride, lots of local slang ("fried-out Kombi," "head full of zombie") and even the tune of a popular Aussie children's song, "Kookaburra," for the flute part. Bowie began the 80s with a dismissal of those he saw as imitators or cheap fashionistas. Eventually, he had the shit sued out of him, and hip-hop was forever changed. The difference between this song off Illusion II and CD, of course, is that this has the rest of the band to anchor it, while CD was nothing but Axl’s untrammeled ego. Richie attempted to find some suitable foreign phrases but got impatient and invented his own international party language. 30. Not exactly one to sing along to, but you can put this one on the headphones and assure yourself that you’re not alone in your madness. Anyway I almost can´t accept that that song could be a hit; in fact George helped it become a bit known worldwide after his "My Sweet Lord", as I, for example, heard it ("He´s So Fine") just today, Sept.23,2009, FOR THE FIRST TIME, just for some old curiosity, while I knew "MY SWEET LORD" since 1971!! 2. So let’s do this line-by-line. But it's a sweet thought. Best moment: The post-chorus guitar break at 2:00, where Slash tears off the nastiest riff this side of “Simple Man.”. Blinding Lights The Weeknd. Best moment: A chirpy little song that leaps into anthemic epic at the three-minute mark, like a Spongebob episode that suddenly seeks to explain the bleak meaninglessness of life. And unlike most of the other sonic shish-kebabs on this album, “Street of Dreams” hangs together sonically from start to finish, building theme atop theme into something that, yes, ranks among the best second-tier Guns songs. 21. Sometimes you’ve got to kick them out of the nest. 20. A global hit in 1981, the star's signature song finds him joined by the mighty Temptations on backing vocals—including James's uncle, Melvin Franklin. The Nigerian-born, U.K.-raised singer-songwriter is in top form on this hit single from her multi-platinum-selling second album, Promise. 36. The whole cheerful “kill my girlfriend” vibe sounds way, way off in 2016, but man, was it ripe for sing-alongs back in the ’80s. This is all the promise of the biggest band in the world blown straight to hell. Biz Markie was both emblematic of the genre’s giddy charms and the man responsible for its ultimate downfall. This site shows exact matches, but also shows close matches, so if you don’t get every word right, you should still be able to find the song. Best moment: The break at 1:47, where Axl has to come to terms with the fact that “what I thought was beautiful don’t live inside of you no more.” This is the song he’s been trying to write for decades. Axl wanders in on the chorus, throwing in a couple extra vowels to remind everyone that he’s surrendering the spotlight for just a moment but could grab it back at any moment. Another one that’s nobody’s favorite, but always effective in that Eternal High School Parking Lot that we all cruise through, windows down. Lyrics. “Oh My God” (End of Days soundtrack)Here’s a bit of strangeness tucked into a forgettable Schwarzenegger-movie soundtrack, what was at the time the first new Guns song in a decade. “Perfect Crime” (Use Your Illusion I)This is the logical successor to songs like “My Michelle” on Appetite, a jackhammer of a song that, thanks to Illusion drummer Matt Sorum, stomps rather than swings. That’s why the band will be a dance-floor killer until a comet demolishes us. “You Ain’t The First” (Use Your Illusion I)Those dang women, they never listen! If you replace "love" with "drugs" in this song, I think this song still makes sense, and maybe even a little more sense. “14 Years” (Use Your Illusion II)This, along with “Double-Talking Jive,” is a hint of where Guns could’ve gone, the greatest blues-bar band since the Stones. Try cross fade the name of the song is cold... Who Sings A Song Called Friends Forever Came Out In The 80's R&B? LISA LISA & CULT JAM – I WONDER IF I TAKE YOU HOME (1985) R- This feels like the 80s! 374 eurythmics would i lie to you. Watch all Do They Know It Eps! 56. Plus, the wickedness embodied in the song’s break is beyond anything that any of the now-forgotten hair bands that were Guns’ contemporaries could possibly envision. The lyrics pour out in a nervy jumble of apocalyptic imagery, military danger and mass-media frenzy, with pointed name-drops of pop-culture figures (Lenny Bruce, Leonid Brezhnev, Leonard Bernstein and Lester Bangs) united only by their initials. Bursting with ambition, frustration and sex, “Dancing in the Dark” is also Springsteen’s dance-floor peak, with a typically stunning sax solo by the late Clarence Clemons to top it all off. The song’s not even 90 seconds long. Sniff. 6. Best moment: I always thought this was a song about writing your mom letters to know you’re alive, but Axl’s line of “sleepin’ late and suckin’ me” suggests maybe he has a different interpretation. Axl ranted from the stage when Guns opened for the Stones back in the late 1980s in what must have seemed like a charming temper tantrum to Jagger and Richards. That, as we’ve seen, is not always easy for Guns to do. DaBaby) Dua Lipa. Sometimes, less is far, far more. With Ryan O'Neal, Jack Warden, Mariangela Melato, Richard Kiel. Her approach to this song—which, when you break it down, is more about loneliness than love—says a lot about her ability to radiate warmth and positivity through her singular sound. Even that sampling by MC Hammer can't diminish its greatness. At its best, this band could do damn near anything it wanted. You wouldn’t believe it these days, seeing Axl Rose wheezing or laid up with a broken leg and Slash with a dadbod, but there was a time when Guns N’ Roses wasn’t just a band, they were a threat. No guitar act better assimilated hip-hop than the Clash, probably because they had so much practice sponging up dub. My baby's so dog gone fine, She loves me, come rain, come shine Oh oh yeah so fine. Throw in the bluesy harmonica and cowbell, and this riff is wicked enough to steal your car. Best moment: When Axl nails the “now you’re messin’ with a SON OF A BEEEEIITCH” with authority. Is there anyone who doesn’t like this song? That’s why it is so much fun to belt out the chorus of this song whenever we hear it, no matter where we are, or how old (or young) we get. “Attitude” (The Spaghetti Incident? We may dismiss the '80s as an era of musical cheese, light on substance and heavy on excess. Anyone Justin Bieber. Jones liked it so much he sampled the track a decade later in “The Globe.”. You'd think that Mike Tyson air-drumming to Phil Collins's 1981 signature hit in The Hangover would've somehow sapped "In the Air Tonight" of its eerie potency. This final single—or the last that matters, anyway—was a dry run for Mick Jones’s sampling-loving crew Big Audio Dynamite, a bit of Isley Brothers meets a Bronx boom box. 34. Oh, that ill-fated bassline. Best moment: The jagged closing chord sequence at 4:12, where Izzy seems to be railing against the chains of this goofy-ass tender-rock-n-roller convention and Slash slithers in with some wicked slide guitar to remind you that flowers aren’t the only part of this band’s name. Listen as she goes from thinking her lost love believed in love, to wishing it were so, to wishing it for … Debussy once noted, “Music is the space between notes.” Prince decked the emptiness with eyeliner and silk. During the 1980s the chart was based collectively on each single's weekly physical sales figures and airplay on American radio station.. George Michael was the only artist to achieve two year-end Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles in the 1980s. Why’s he so dang angry? By the middle of the decade, the band was mining house music heavily enough to join a union in Chicago though always balancing disco ecstasy with melancholy in true Mancunian fashion. Rest assured, we have you covered. “Chinese Democracy” (Chinese Democracy)This one hits all the over-slathered CD marks: absurdly long intro (46 seconds of ambient noise and conversation? Best moment: Even the damn cowbell sounds ominous. 55. But the chorus, which finally shows up more than three minutes into this six-minute beast, is one of those soaring orchestral jobs that almost verges on greatness. I'd like to list entire song lyrics to everyone's favorite songs, but that's a blatent copywrite violation, and I don't need any nasty letters in the mail, but a few lines from a song should be considered fair use. 11. Sung by Christine McVie, this delectable swoon of a song appears on the band’s 1987 album Tango in the Night, and it’s the kind of track that needs to be played at least three times in a row, preferably on a roadtrip involving lots of singing along, to reach satisfaction saturation. Best moment: “Funny how everything was roses when we held on to the guns” might just be Axl’s best lyric ever. Best moment: The opening notes. 3. They’re not a knife in the ribs, they’re an 18-wheeler through the front door. Stars such as Anne Murray, Willie Nelson, Eddie Rabbit, George Jones, Alabama, Dolly Parton and others were heard on the radio. And it only gets more intense from there, building a manifesto of what to take swigs at, including this gem: “Elvis was a hero to most / But he never meant shit to me / You see, straight-up racist that sucker was / Simple and plain / Mother fuck him and John Wayne / 'Cause I'm black and I'm proud.” And that’s the truth, Ruth. Here’s another GnR tune about a faithless and unreliable ex-lover (“I’ve tried so hard to get through to you / but your head’s so far from the realness of truth”), this time with the twist that it’s all on acoustic guitar, making it a cheerily bitter campfire song! That’s in force here on “Brownstone,” which starts with a sinister shuffle before segueing into a dance-with-the-devil groove. Have your say in the comments below, or hit me at jay.busbee@yahoo.com. “Just A Friend” is the opposite of braggadocio. “Riad n’ the Bedouins” (Chinese Democracy)If you took out all the slow-burn intros on CD, you’d lop about a third of the album’s running time. It’s a rite of passage, a way to get one’s stability while not drifting too far out of the realm of one’s experience. They didn’t just slam the door behind them; they burned the place to the ground as they left. It’s a discount-rack version of “Estranged,” and for that, I kind of love its overwhelming ambition and designs on an epic scope. Yes, it’s got all the hallmarks of Guns-related product — somebody who’s done Axl wrong, ascending blues-rock stomp in the chorus, multiple Axl voices (the crooner, the banshee) — but it’s like vinyl played too slow, a somnolent jam that never gets out of first gear. “ Brownstone, ” which starts with a mass audience neon leg warmers, and hip-hop forever.
